Smith-Bivol Title Bout Hinges on WBO Sanctioning Decision for Russia Venue
Callum Smith has revealed that his highly anticipated light-heavyweight title clash against unified champion Dmitry Bivol is awaiting official confirmation due to a WBO sanctioning decision regarding the fight's potential location in Russia. The Liverpudlian remains confident the bout will proceed.
The boxing world is holding its breath as Callum Smith's mandatory challenge against unified light-heavyweight king Dmitry Bivol remains unconfirmed, despite both fighters seemingly agreeing to the contest. Smith, a former super-middleweight world champion, is poised for a shot at Bivol's WBA (Super) and IBF titles, but the official announcement is stalled.
Speaking on 'The Smith Brothers: Not A Podcast,' Smith shed light on the delay, stating that the hold-up is due to the World Boxing Organization (WBO) needing to sanction the fight, particularly concerning its proposed venue in Russia. The WBO had previously declined to sanction Bivol's last defense against Michael Eifert in Russia, citing ongoing geopolitical issues.
Bivol, who holds the WBA (Super), IBF, and WBO light-heavyweight belts, returned to action in May after a 15-month layoff, successfully defending his WBA and IBF titles against Eifert via a points victory. However, the WBO title was not on the line for that bout due to the sanctioning body's decision.
Smith expressed optimism that the WBO will greenlight the upcoming fight, allowing the mandatory challenge to proceed. Should the WBO give its approval, it would pave the way for one of the most significant matchups in the light-heavyweight division, with Smith aiming to become a two-division world champion.
